Web courses power point fall 2010

Editor's Notes

  1. When LexisNexis decided to provide faculty with a course management platform, we went straight to the experts – Blackboard. Web Courses, simply put, is Blackboard on LexisNexis. It has all the ease-of-use and well-renowned functionality of Blackboard, along with specialized legal content from LexisNexis. With LexisNexis Web Courses, you can create a personalized and engaged learning experience and offer students the latest in course management technology. Web Courses will save you time in managing student assignments with new features like anonymous grading and SafeAssign. And, you will be able to communicate with your students where they are at – through Facebook, mobile devices, blogs and chat. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce you to LexisNexis Web Courses by demonstrating how to set up a Web Course, design your course and add content, and discuss the new and exclusive features of Web Courses. At the end of this session, you will be familiar with the latest technology and tools available in course management and will be able to easily utilize Web Courses for your classes.
  2. To begin, sign on to LexisNexis at http://www.lexisnexis.com/lawschool using your Custom ID and Password.
  3. Your first step in using Web Courses is to create a new course. After you have signed on, click the Web Courses tab, then click Create a New Web Course.
  4. Using the Create a New Web Course link, simply fill out a short form identifying the name and subject matter of your course and the start and end date, then click Save. Competitive Information: Creating a Web Course is much quicker than creating a TWEN page. It is simply a short form to fill out. TWEN forces users through a long set-up “wizard”. In fact, to create a TWEN course, users must walk through many features of customizations that are not applicable to them. On Web Courses, set-up is quick and easy!
  5. After saving your new course, close the browser and go back to the Web Courses tab on the LexisNexis law school homepage. Click Access Web Courses.
  6. Once launching Web Courses, you will land on the Web Courses home page. Everything on this page can be modified, but the default provides recent announcements, tasks, events from your Web Course calendars, tutorials on using Blackboard 9.1, and, most importantly, the list of your courses. To access your new course shell, click that course from the Course List. Note: Anytime an assignment is added to the course, it will show up under “My Tasks” visible to both students and faculty enrolled in the course. Anytime an event is added to the course calendar, this will show up under the “My Calendar” section visible to both students and faculty enrolled in the course.
  7. Beyond these communication tools, Web Courses offer you the ability to reach your students through other devices. Educators are always looking for new ways to connect with their students, and surveys state that learners expect to be able to interact with everything on their mobile devices. Now you can meet and exceed these expectations. LexisNexis Web Courses include Blackboard Sync capabilities. This allows individual users (your students) to sync their Web Courses content to their Facebook page and/or their iPhones. To view these applications, click Blackboard Sync from the WebCourses home page under Tools.
  8. This is an example of an empty course shell. Before you begin adding content to our course, you will want to design your course menu and set your enrollment options. To set up your new course, ensure that the Edit Mode is set to On in the upper right corner of the screen. (Click OFF) Web Courses come pre-loaded with the Content Areas you see depicted as red buttons in the left frame. You can easily add, delete or modify these Content Areas.
  9. To add a content area, click the + at the top left corner of the menu, then click Create Content Area.
  10. Name your new Content Area, example: Handouts, then make it Available to Users. Click Submit.
  11. Your new Content Area has been added to your Menu. If you see a box with a line through it next to the content area, by hovering your mouse over this icon it will inform you that it is currently hidden from student view. To unhide the content area, use the double down arrows to the right of the content area to “Show Link”.
  12. To move this new Content Area within the menu, simply click the directional arrows in the left column, then drag and drop the item anywhere within the list. Web Courses offer you web 2.0 functionality such as this drag and drop feature, allowing you to easily create and modify the content for your course.
  13. To modify or delete any items within the menu, simply click the down arrows to the right of the item name, then click Rename Link (or Delete).
  14. Clicking the Rename link allows you to easily modify the menu items, such as I’ve done here by renaming this item “Contact Information”.
  15. Next, you will want to set your enrollment options. You can select for students to enroll themselves (self-enrollment) or you or your System Administrator can enroll the students in your course. To set the enrollment options, in the Contol Panel, click Customization. Then, click Enrollment Options.
  16. On the Enrollment Options screen, simply select your preferred option. You can set a time-frame for open enrollment and can even require an access code to enroll in order to provide an added layer of security to your course. Then, click Submit to set those Enrollment Options.
  17. Whichever option you choose, you can easily enroll users or view the list of enrolled students through the Control Panel. Click Users and Groups in the Control Panel, then click Users.
  18. The next screen will provide a list of your enrolled students. To enroll new students, simply click Find Users to Enroll, then browse to locate the student. You can search using “Last Name > Equal to > [Last Name]”. You will then be able to select that student’s name and enroll him/her in the course. If there are students whom you need to remove from the course, each user will have a box next to their name. Simply check the box, then click Remove User from Course. To change the status of a student from “Student” to “Teaching Assistant” or other role, use the double down arrows to the left of the User ID for that student and select “Change User’s Role In Course”.
  19. Many professors like to change the look and design of their course, and Web Courses provides for many customization options. To change the design of the course, click Customization in the Control Panel, then click Style.
  20. On the Style page, you can change the Menu Style, including whether you prefer text or buttons and the color. You can change the menu display, content view, set the course entry point, and even add a banner to your Web Course. Many instructors choose to change the style to their school colors and add their school’s logo as their banner. Competitive Information: LNWC offers more customization options, including more choices to enhance the color, style, and entry point of the course.  On TWEN, customization options are limited.  For example, users can change the link names but can not alter their style or color.
  21. Now that you have set your course menu, enrollment options, and design, you are ready to add content to your Web Course. This task is as easy as adding an attachment to an email!
  22. To add a document to your Web Course, first select the Content Area where you would like to add the document. For example, click Handouts in the Course Menu, then click Build Content.
  23. Here the user can choose to simply create an item (upload a document) or create folder to house different categories of documents. This is also where the user would go upload a SlideShare Presentation or other type of Mashup.
  24. To add a Handout to your WebCourse, simply Name the document, then add text (optional), then click Browse to find the document you wish to upload to your course. You can choose from several other options, including selecting how the file will appear on the screen (as a link or unpackaged on the page), tracking the number of views, and making the document available only during a specific time period. Once you have selected your options, just click Submit to upload the document to your Web Course.
  25. You will then see the document on your Web Course under the Handouts Content Area.
  26. Another option when adding documents to your course is to add hyperlinks to your document as you upload it. Many professors choose to LexLink their syllabus to their WebCourse. To do this, first select Syllabus in the Menu. Under the Add Interactive Tool button, click LexisNexis citation links to document.
  27. Name the document, then add text (optional). Next, simply browse to find the document you wish to LexLink and upload, then click Submit.
  28. The Syllabus had been added to the Web Course and citations within the document have been linked to LexisNexis. Competitive Information: On TWEN, citations within all documents are automatically linked as they are added. On LexisNexis, we provide instructors the option of whether or not to add hyperlinks, with no additional steps necessary – simply upload the document through “Create Item” to add a document without links, or use “Add Interactive Tool” to LexLink the document.
  29. Those who have a SlideShare account (www.slideshare.net) can upload presentations to SlideShare and then insert them on the Web Course. To do this, simply click the content area to deposit the presentation and then use the “Build Content” button and select “SlideShare Presentation” under the Mashup heading.
  30. When a student clicks on the SlideShare link within in the Web Course, it will take them to the Slideshare presentation on the SlideShare platform.
  31. Web Courses allow you to easily communicate with your students through a wide array of formats, including: blogs, virtual classroom, chat, email, discussion board, journals, emails Facebook and an iPhone App!
  32. Your Web Course comes pre-loaded with the Discussion Forums and Email Functionality. To add other communication formats to your Web Course, click the + in the Course Menu, then click the Create Tool Link.
  33. For example, if you would like to add a Journal, simply name the Tool: Prof’s Journal, then select the Type: Journals. Make the Tool available to users, then click Submit.
  34. Your new Journal has been added to your Course Menu. Now, you can click Create Journal to allow for communication between you and individual students or all students.
  35. One of the most popular communication tools on Web Courses is the Discussion Board feature. To add or modify a forum, post a message, or reply to a thread, simply click Discussion Forums in the Menu.
  36. By clicking Create Forum, you can add a post by simply filling out the form. Name the post, add a description (optional), set the forum availability and settings, then click Submit.
  37. A Web Course Calendar can be added to your course and used to schedule events, deadlines and important dates. To add a Course Calendar to the menu, click + in the Menu, then click Create Tool link.
  38. Name the Tool: Course Calendar, then select Calendar from the Type drop-down menu. Make the Course Calendar available to users, then click Submit.
  39. Your Course Calendar will now be available on your Menu and you can begin adding events, deadlines, and important dates.
  40. With Web Courses, scheduling office hours and creating online conference sign-ups is quick and easy. Schedule a single conference, create blocks of conference time slots, or establish recurring appointments. When students sign up for an appointment/conference, they automatically receive Outlook appointment notices. To schedule appointments, click Appointments in the Course Menu.
  41. Then, simply use the Conference Set Up Wizard to schedule your appointments. Competitive Information: The LNWC conference scheduler is almost exactly on par with TWEN. Professors can schedule recurring appointments, establish blocks of appointments, or create a single appointment. Importantly, LNWC will send students an appointment notice so that students can seamlessly add the appointments to their electronic calendars. This saves the professor time by eliminating the need for reminders and reducing the number of missed appointments. Click on “Profile” to set up professor information (phone, email, photo, etc)
  42. Click “Add Conferences” to set available time for students to schedule a meeting with you Click “Add Appointment” if you are unavailable due to an appointment Easily add a group session to allow for multiple students to sign up at once
  43. Simply use the wizard to easily schedule available times for student conferences. Note: When a student schedules a conference with you, it will automatically send an email to both the professor and the student. If the professor/student clicks on the link within the email it will add it to their Outlook calendars. The professor can also easily cancel that appointment by simply going into their outlook calendar and editing the appointment from there.
  44. Click the “+” in the menu area and from the options select “Create Tool Link”.
  45. Title the wiki and then from the “Type” drop down menu select “Wikis”
  46. Notice the small box to the right of the titlte “Research Wiki” content area, this means it is not currently visible to students. To make it visible, use the double down arrows to the right of the content area and click “Show Link”. To create the new wiki, click “Create Wiki”.
  47. Enter relevant information to create the wiki and choose to grade or not grade participation and click submit.
  48. The wiki is now ready for class participation.
  49. In a few simple steps, you can create assignments in your Web Course. Assignments allow you to create coursework and manage grades and feedback for each student separately. Assignments can be anything from CALI lessons (under Add Interactive Tool) to multiple choice quizzes, essay questions to an exercise drop-box for students to send you their coursework.
  50. To create an assignment, click Assignments in the Course menu, then click Assignment under Crete Assessment. You also have the ability to create a “Test” which could be true/false questions, multiple choice, short answer, etc. The “Survey” option allows the professor to survey the class anonymously, similar to Survey Monkey.
  51. Name your Exercise, example: Closed Memo. You have the option of adding text and/or attaching a file. Set the number of points possible for the exercise, then make the exercise available. Most professors allow for unlimited attempts in case students forget to attach their exercise. You can choose to make the exercise available only during a certain time frame, specify the due date, then click Submit. TIP: When the professor creates the exercise/assignment and provides a due date, it will show up as a “Task” from the Web Course landing home page as a reminder to the student. TIP: When creating the exercise/assignment, if the professor leaves the box selected to “Make the Exercise Available” – this will allow for a student to submit their exercise even if it’s past the due date (although it will be marked as late). However, if the professor selected “Limit Availability”, then the assignment will actually disappear from the student view and they will not be able to submit if they are late in completing it.
  52. The Closed Memo assignment has now been posted to the course and it is ready to be completed by students. The students will see the assignment when they click Assignments in the Course Menu. When the students’ submit their closed memo for this assignment, the system will automatically time stamp the submission.
  53. To view student submissions to an assignment, click Grade Center from the Control Panel, then Full Grade Center. All submitted assignments can be viewed in the resulting spreadsheet. Instructors can download the assignments in a ZIP file to a preferred location. Assignments can also be graded from this page by clicking on the column for that assignment, then clicking the left side of the cell in the column where you would like to insert the grade. Grades are added just as in an excel spreadsheet. If you would like to grade assignments anonymously, simply go to the Column for the assignment you would like to grade anonymously, then click the down arrows in that column. Select Grade Anonymously. When you Grade Anonymously, assignments are listed on the next screen in random order. From this screen, you can download the submitted assignment from the attached files. You can add grades and comments from this screen. Click View Next to view the next assignment or save your progress and exit. When you resume grading in your next session, you will start up where you left off. When you return to the Results Center, scores will be entered in the rows where you have assigned grades. Competitive Information: On LNWC, it’s easy to designate particular assignments for anonymous grading. On TWEN, users must decide, at the outset, either to make all assignments anonymous or to receive all assignments with names displayed. Since many LR&W professors receive both drafts and final papers, LNWC offers a significant advantage. LNWC lets users receive all assignments electronically and in one place. Later, users have the option of viewing particular assignments anonymously, while viewing others with names displayed.
  54. Within the Grade Center use the double down arrows next to each column heading to grade the assignment Quick Column Information : Provides basic information about that column (e.g., The name, points possible, due date etc) Grade Anonymously : Allows you to pick and choose what assignments you would like to grade anonymously. Grade Attempts: Use this option if you do not want to grade anonymously. Edit Column Information : Lets the professor determine if they want the students to be able to view this grade or not. Perhaps they want to turn off the ability to view this column until they are done grading all the students assignment so everyone gets their grade at the same time. Also allows for the professor to not include this column info in their final grade tally if they so chose to exclude it. They can also alter the title of the column here as well. Column Stats : Shows distribution levels for that particular assignment Assignment File Cleanup : Allows the professor to delete attempts by the student Exercise File Download : Allows the professor to download the assignments into a zip file and grade them offline Clear Attempts for All Users : Clears all assignment deposits for this exercise
  55. Using the double down arrows next to the assignment title, click “Grade Anonymously”.
  56. Notice that it will automatically hide the identity of the student This student has attempted to submit the exercise twice. Attempt #1 shows that there is nothing attached (the plus sign is missing). Attempt #2 does have a plus sign which we can expand to see the actual exercise (more details on next slide ) When finished grading, click Save and Continue Also note, when grading online the professor can “Save and Exit” at any time and come back to grading at a later date When using anonymous grading, the system will automatically select assignments at random they do not go in order of alphabetical name
  57. Upon expanding the + sign next to Attempt #2, the professor can access the submitted assignment and attach points to that assignment. Slide two is a screen view of what falls below the Attempt area. Under the Evaluation section – this is where professors can write notes to the student. Additionally, if the professor uses Microsoft Word and provides corrections and edits directly on the electronic document, the professor could save the original document submitted by the student to their computer. The professor could then make corrections and save the new copy to their computer. 59. SafeAssign helps prevent plagiarism by detecting unoriginal content in submitted works. It creates opportunities to educate students on proper attribution and citing techniques while properly leveraging the wealth of information at students’ disposal. SafeAssign uses a unique originality-detecting algorithm to run a comprehensive comparison of submitted papers across an industry-leading collection of databases, including the internet, ProQuest/ABI Inform Database, institutional document archives containing all papers submitted by users of Web Courses, and a global reference database containing papers that were sent to SafeAssign through Blackboard. SafeAssign automates the plagiarism-checking process, saving instructors valuable time. Papers submitted to SafeAssign receive an easy-to-use Originality Report that details the results of the comprehensive comparison. Competitive Information: TWEN does not have a plagiarism-checking feature.

Simply go to “ Packages & Utilities ” under the Control Panel and select “ Bulk Delete ”. This will allow the professor to “delete” out any content that is not relevant to the new class of students. Once the content has been cleaned out, the professor will need to change the date availability for the Web Course. To do this, locate the “ Customization ” area within the Control Panel and select “ Properties ”. Lastly, if a professor would like to “ Archive ” the course before making any changes to it they can do this by locating the “ Properties & Utilities ” section under the Control Panel and selecting “ Export/Archive Course ”. This will preserve the original Web Course.
